WAU Staff Update

The Wayne Academic Union (WAU) employs three individuals: an Executive Director, an Organizer, and an Office Administrator. The Organizer and Office Administrator, along with other colleagues at various higher education institutions in Michigan (e.g., LEO, GEO, UPTF, etc), are represented by the Communication Workers of America (CWA), known as the Guild. The first contract for WAU-employed CWA staff was negotiated in 2022. The first contract was modeled after the employee agreement in place for Wayne State AAUP (WAU) staff before they unionized.

Recent discussions and negotiations between WAU and CWA have resulted in a tentative agreement (TA), including measures to contain long-term benefit costs in health care coverage. These align CWA members' medical plans with those of WAU members. On January 5, 2024, the Executive Board approved the TA by a vote of 8 to 1, with one abstention.
